How to get a Gemini API key
The Saver plan translates chapters with your own Google Gemini API key. You can get the key free from Google AI Studio; Google’s free tier has usage limits.
Why Saver needs your own key
OpenReader Saver translates with a Google Gemini API key that belongs to you. OpenReader stores the key encrypted, uses it only for the chapter translations you ask for, and never shows it back in full. Story terms are still found on OpenReader's own engine, so your key is not used for that.
Because the key belongs to your Google account, Google’s terms, quotas, and free-tier limits apply to your translations. Google may also bill your account if you enable billing for that project.
Four steps
Open Google AI Studio
Open aistudio.google.com/app/apikey in a new tab and sign in with your Google account.
Create an API key
Click “Create API key”, then choose an existing Google Cloud project or let AI Studio create a new one.
Copy the key
Copy the key as soon as it appears. It starts with “AIza”, and Google will not show it again later.
Save it in OpenReader
Open Settings, find the “Gemini API key” section, paste the key, and save. OpenReader checks it with Google and confirms when it is ready.
Keep it private
- Treat the key like a password. Anyone who has it can spend your Google quota.
- You can replace or remove the key in your profile at any time.
- If the key leaks, delete or rotate it in Google AI Studio, then save the new key in OpenReader.
Still stuck?
Google AI Studio shows the project and any quota limits behind your key. If OpenReader reports that a key is not valid, create a fresh key in AI Studio and save that one instead.
