Terms of Service
Acceptance of these terms
These terms are an agreement between you and OpenReader. By creating an account, signing in, or using OpenReader — the website, the browser extension, its reader and translation services, and any related app — you agree to them. If you do not agree with them, do not create an account and do not use the service. You must be at least 13 years old, or the minimum age for digital consent where you live, and old enough to enter into this agreement under the law of your country.
Changes to OpenReader and these terms
We may change the service at any time: add, modify, or withdraw features, plans, prices, limits, and supported languages, and replace or discontinue any part of it. We may also update these terms. Material changes are announced in the app or by email before they take effect, and we may ask you to accept the updated documents before you continue. Continuing to use OpenReader after a change takes effect means you accept it. If you do not accept a change, stop using the service and cancel your account.
Your account is a license, not property
Your account and everything attached to it — membership, subscription, plan access, credits, in-app balances, rewards, discounts, and promotional benefits — are a limited, revocable, non-transferable, non-exclusive license to use OpenReader while your account is in good standing. They have no cash value, cannot be bought, sold, traded, transferred, or inherited, are not your personal property, and give you no ownership interest in OpenReader. We may suspend or end this license as described below.
Fair Play Policy
OpenReader works because readers use it honestly. You agree not to: cheat, exploit bugs or glitches, or manipulate translations, limits, rewards, referrals, or billing; use bots, scrapers, crawlers, or other automated access against OpenReader or the sites we support; bypass, or attempt to bypass, limits, paywalls, regional or rate limits, or any other technical restriction; share, sell, rent, or resell your account, or keep multiple accounts to abuse free chapters, trials, discounts, or promotions; abuse chargebacks or refunds; harass, threaten, impersonate, or misrepresent yourself to other people or to us; upload or request unlawful, infringing, or harmful content, or use OpenReader to infringe anyone's copyright; reverse engineer, decompile, or copy the service; interfere with the service, its servers, or another reader's use of it; or evade a suspension or termination we have already applied. This list is not exhaustive: it also covers any other conduct we reasonably consider harmful to the service, other readers, rights holders, or to us.
Suspension and termination
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we may act at our sole discretion, with or without notice, and warn you, restrict or remove features, cancel a subscription, suspend or permanently terminate any account or membership, remove content, and void credits, rewards, discounts, and promotional benefits, if we believe you have violated these terms or the Fair Play Policy, if your use creates risk or legal exposure for us, at the request of law enforcement or a rights holder, if your account is inactive for a prolonged period, or if we discontinue the service or a feature. If we terminate your account for a violation, fees already paid, unused credits, and remaining subscription time are forfeited without refund, except where a refund is required by law or by the mandatory refund rules of the platform the payment went through (such as Paddle, the Apple App Store, or Google Play). We may also block you from registering again. Sections that by their nature should survive termination — including license limits, disclaimers, limitation of liability, and indemnity — survive it.
Cancelling your account
You may stop using OpenReader at any time. Cancelling a subscription stops it from renewing, and you keep access until the end of the period you have already paid for. You can also delete your account from your profile, which ends your access and starts the deletion process described in the Privacy Policy. Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription you started through an app store: cancel it where you bought it.
Service messages and marketing email
We send service messages about your account, billing, security, and important changes to the service or these documents. They are part of the service and cannot be switched off while you have an account. Marketing email — newsletters, product news, offers, promotions, surveys, and event invitations — is sent only if you have opted in, whether when you accepted these terms or later in your account settings. You can withdraw that consent at any time from the unsubscribe link in any marketing message or from your account settings.
The service is provided as is
OpenReader is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement. Machine translation is imperfect: meaning, names, and tone can be wrong, and a translation is not the original work. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free, or that it will work with every site, browser, or book. Supported sites, languages, and providers may change or be withdrawn at any time.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, OpenReader is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost reading progress, lost content, lost credits, or lost data, arising out of or relating to your use of the service, even if we have been advised of the possibility. To the same extent, our total liability for all claims relating to the service is limited to the amount you paid us for it in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law, and nothing here reduces your mandatory consumer rights.
Your responsibility to us
You are responsible for your account, for keeping your sign-in secure, and for everything done through it. You agree to indemnify and hold OpenReader harmless from claims, damages, losses, and reasonable costs (including legal fees) that arise from your breach of these terms or the Fair Play Policy, from content you submit or request through the service, or from your infringement of someone else's rights.
General terms
If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, that part is limited or removed and the rest stays in force. If we do not enforce a provision, that is not a waiver of it. These terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and OpenReader about the service and replace earlier agreements on the same subject. We may assign these terms, in whole or in part, to another party, including in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets; you may not assign them without our written agreement. We may change or discontinue the service as described above.
